David Marc Fishman asked:

The main part of metal detectors is the control box, shaft, and search coil. Control box which has speaker, batteries, and microprocessor coordinates all activities. To protect the food source many companies use metal detectors to check for metal contaminates in the food, and some drug companies use the metal detectors to check for the same thing in drugs.

Besides metal detection, a walk-through metal detector includes and interface for an operator and a control unit plus environmental tolerance, electro magnetic compatibility, and the assurance of quality control. The control box is the brain of a metal detector. The magnetized metallic objects under the ground send a signal to the control box. Metal detectors that are used in mining need to be compact because of the space restrictions so the control unit and the search coil are integrated into a single unit.

This disk comes off the shaft at an angle, which allows it to be held parallel to the ground. Hand held detectors come in various types, professional, commercial, all-purpose, gold metal, beach and metal that is a relic. Many people use metal detectors to comb the beach for treasures, people are looking for coins, or any other type of metals that might produce a wealth of income. If you are walking along a beach you might come across many people with their instruments looking for these treasures. Since 911 security has gotten tougher and many airports and schools have turned to metal detectors, as well and government buildings, hand held metal detectors are often an important part of security procedures.

A great method of locating and preventing the use of dangerous items such as handguns or knives is the hand held metal detector. They are hand held security metal detectors and walk through metal detectors. Walk over or hand held models of metal detectors are normally used in airports.

Best rated walk through metal detectors have high target selection, low rate of false alarm, consistent detection, and a two way directional system. Cheap metal detectors are available in hand held, waterproof, and walk through models. Walk through metal detectors offer quick and effective processing.

Underwater metal detectors can cost around $400-$600. Underwater metal detectors are widely used to locate metallic objects under water. Underwater construction companies use underwater metal detectors for pipeline or cable locating functions. Some of the underwater metal detectors can adjust the search depth.

Advanced security metal detectors use low radiation x-rays for screening. Many metal detectors have microprocessor technology to check for coarse grained food in cornflakes, popcorn and noodles. Advanced gold detectors can also resist dust and moisture. Some of the advanced gold metal detectors have three modes for speed tracking.

Usually, the price of a metal detector starts from $65. Some sites offer price discounts.

Most sites provide a price list for metal detectors. The price of metal detectors may vary, based on features and functions. If you are just starting out it is a good idea to purchase an inexpensive model before sinking the dollars into the hobby.

Ann Knapp asked:

For production part manufacturers, cleaning specifications are a major concern when setting up a line. Cleaning specifications have numerous effects on production, planning, and the ultimate success of a job. They set the parameters for the type of washer that will be used, they determine what chemicals and steps will be necessary within the washing process, and keeping the customer pleased depends on meeting or exceeding the guidelines. The specifications can be rigid, difficult to understand, and tough to meet for many manufacturers. That is why it is imperative to seek the help of a qualified lab to conduct proper testing, prior to the purchase of cleaning equipment.

Testing helps manufacturers gain a clear understanding of how clean their parts need to be, and lays the groundwork for determining how to get there. A reputable cleanliness testing lab will have a variety of methods encompassing many types of testing. These will encompass qualitative, quantitative, subjective, and objective methods of testing, allowing for a comprehensive study of the part. The more information, the better a washing process can be designed to meet the needs of the manufacturer.

First, there is visual analysis alone. Human visual analysis, using no instruments, is entirely subjective and unreliable. Since many parts have specifications in the microns, the human eye is virtually worthless. A human hair is 70-100 micros in width, and many parts have to be free of particles that are slightly larger than that. When dealing with that small of contamination, it is difficult to trust the eyes of an observer.

Black light/UV Testing exposes clean and dirty samples to a 254nm and 365nm light. They are observed for fluorescence, which determines the contaminant level of the part. With this method there is a visual identification of the contamination present on the part. It is also inexpensive, and can even be implemented into the manufacturing process as a part of the line. However, it is a subjective test. The individual determines cleanliness; there is no objective analysis performed by a machine or data received.

Millipore testing is a commonly used objective measurement standard for cleanliness specifications. The part is first washed in an aqueous or sealed solvent system and passes a cursory subjective cleanliness review like those listed above. The part is then rinsed with a solvent to remove all the contaminant that had remained on the part after cleaning, is collected and filtered through a pre-weighed membrane that has a specified micron rating. The membrane with the contaminant, which is greater than the size of the specified micron rating, is dried and weighed. The net weight equals the overall amount of contaminant left on the part. Millipore testing is common, inexpensive, objective and provides semi-quantitative information. However, regimented, standardized testing techniques must be repeated and followed throughout the process in order for this testing to be valid.

Another testing method is particle counting. The part is washed as it is with the Millipore testing and then rinsed or cleaned with an ultrasonic bath. The solution is then introduced to laser by way of an automated pressure-sampling device. Light scattering receiving optics or extinction detectors gather the redirected or diffracted energy and create a raw sensor output for each particle. The results are expressed in particles per fluid volume or particles per part. This method can quantify large quantities of particulates quickly and indicate particles within certain ranges. The equipment is costly- $10,000 to $30,000. Also, bubbles in the sample are occasionally counted as particles.

A CCD camera compares clean and dirty parts using photographs. The parts are photographed using the same photographic variables, i.e. f-stop and time. Computer software is then used to produce a histogram of pixel intensities, with higher intensities indicating a higher level of contamination. This is a quantitative methodology that few companies are in possession of. Like the particle counter, it is expensive technology. Another drawback is that only contaminants that exhibit fluorescence in the UV range of the camera are documented.

Microscopy is used to examine minute particles. It can be used for particle counting, but the process is subjective and tedious. Cost is an issue with this test as well, ranging up to a $100,000.00.

OSEE is the Optically Stimulated Election Emission test. The surface of the part is subjected to high energy UN light, which causes electrons to be emitted. The reflected electrons are then measured. Clean surfaces emit more electrons than unclean surfaces in this test. OSEE has excellent repeatability, is able to accurately quantify minute levels of contamination and is founded upon solid scientific principles. It is another expensive test, though. OSEE is also unable to identify specific contaminants; it simply can tell if there is contamination.

After the testing has been conducted, the manufacturer should receive a laboratory report. This report should detail the specifics of the contamination found in the testing, and ideally will offer a process by which to reduce contamination. These reports are vital for distilling the information found in testing into a more digestible form.

With proper testing, a wash process can be designed to meet any reasonable cleanliness specification.

Keith George asked:

As the name suggests a Metal Detector is a kind of instrument, which is used to detect metal with the help of electromagnetic induction. It helps in the detection of land mines, weapons like knives or guns at airports, in treasure hunting or in archeology. It can also be helpful in detecting foreign bodies in food.

Construction industries find it useful in detecting steel reinforcing bars present in concretes, pipes, or wires in walls and floors. It can sense any electrically conductive piece of metal. Metal detectors came into being around the end of the 19th century.

Metal detectors have many applications. In archeology metal detectors are of good help. But in some countries like France and Sweden law prohibits metal detectors, but with special permission it can be used. In spite of all these restrictions the contribution of metal detectors in this area cannot be denied. A good example is the utilization of these detectors to inspect wide areas like sites of battlefields, where the only remains could be the surface, scattered with metal objects.

Some times people use consumer metal detectors to find coins on the beach as their hobby. Generally in the following types of hobbyist activities metal detectors are used.

Coin Shooting, searching for coins, mainly old coins.

Prospecting, searching for precious metals like gold or silver

Relic Hunting, searching for any thing that has any historical significance, like weapons.

Treasure Hunting, searching for hidden items.

For security purpose metal detector are of great help. In airports this is used in great extent as it helps to detect any dangerous items carried by passengers that can cause harm to others, especially weapons,

One should know the right procedure of using a metal detector. Here are certain vital steps for using a metal detector:

The very first thing, that is needed to take care of is tuning. This means the detector must be adjusted so that it can recognize the ground as a channel for the targets to be inside. Sometimes however the devise posses a self tuning trait installed. After this one is ready to go for the search of the targets, coins, treasure or anything. The placement of the loop is also very important. To get the best functioning it should be held at arms length along with the loop and it should be barely above the ground and the loop must always be in motion for best result. While searching with the detector one should move at a slow pace.

Jerry Hall asked:

Are you purchasing a detector to use occasionally at a lake or beach? Or do you now find yourself with more available time and can look forward spending considerable time with your new hobby? It is a fact that most of the detectors now in the marketplace are pretty good. If you are planning to buy a metal detector to join the treasure-hunting fun, here are some tips to guide you so that youll get the best deal possible. Metal detectors can be pricey, so youve got to invest your money well.

A recent study proves that hand-held metal detectors are just as accurate as x-rays in finding coins and other metallic objects swallowed by children. They are cheaper and radiation-free, are usually lightweight, highly sensitive and require little maintenance. The special shape of the sensitive surface makes operation of the device easy, unlike portable metal detectors with ring transducers. How much will you spend on a detector? It is advisable to be a little flexible in this regard so that one can buy one that most suits the requirements.

Metal detecting is also about obedience

The hobby and pastime of metal detection is done in areas that are usually either public property or private property. However, both require certain regulations, rules and requirements that need to be followed.

Be honest, be kind, and be respectful In the hobby of metal detection, just as in any area or profession, there are rules that need to be followed that establish certain limitations. But the most important rule and code should come from the one doing the metal detecting. Basic ground rules such as: thou shall not cheat; or thou shall conduct one’s self with integrity, are a necessity.

Respect for already existing rules is groundwork for future success in metal detecting. Plus, it is also important to help your peers and friends follow the same ground rules as you do. Remember that it is just as important to take care of your buddy as it is to take care of yourself.

Remember everyone’s right

Just as you have the right to conduct metal detection on a particular property, it is appropriate that you also acknowledge and respect the rights of an individual to protect their personal and private property. Remember, the higher the coil is above the surface the more depth you will lose. If they’ve got a old coin that is 6 in. below the surface, and your detector can detect 8 in., and the coil is 3 in. above the ground, you will miss that target. If the coil had been directly upon the ground you would be able to detect that target.

As stated earlier, metal detectors could really be expensive. You can cut on cost if you cut on features. Try to look for the best bargain by enumerating the features you are going to need against the one that you can leave off.

Go to your local ” do it yourself ” coin operated car wash. Look for the place where they dump the contents of the 25 cent vacuum cleaners. Search the piles and see what a gold mine they are for coins and rings.

Any place there is construction and the ground is being cleared, that is a great place to start treasure hunting. Successfull treasure hunting starts with having the right metal detector. But which type of metal detector should you get? Complete info on metal detectors and treasure hunting at http://detect-metal.info.

The good news is that prices have never been lower for such easy to use full featured automatic detectors. A good way to view the purchase is to decide how much money you are comfortable spending. Metal detectors using PI (Pulse Induction) technology often makes use of a single coil or even a series of coils that works as a receiver and the transmitter. The short bursts of electricity are allowed to pass through a coil or wire which causes magnetism.

Be sensitive, just because there is no sign that says’ “trespassing is not allowed” does not mean that you cad freely go in and out of their property. As much as possible, ask permission before embarking on a metal detection adventure. Be as courteous as possible. Always try to emphasize that you have respect for the owner’s property. This route almost always leads to success.

Write a letter

This track is always better and is not as intrusive when compared to walking up the owner’s door. If no response is received within a week, it may be appropriate to contact the owner by phone and advise them of the letter sent or if they have any questions, remarks, comments about your metal detection plan. Remember that it is not necessary to offer the owners a share of whatever it is you would find in your metal detection search. But if they bring it up, be open and willing to establish an agreement. However, try not to be disappointed if they decline your request to conduct the search on their premises. There are numerous sites out there waiting to be searched and detected.

All in all, metal detection is a hobby that requires one to follow laws, rules and regulations just like any other profession or game. However, the basic rule to follow is simply honesty, ethics and integrity. How are your “mental detection” skills? Some youth professionals never notice that they’re working with children in distress. Not noticing makes it more likely that you might add to the child’s burdens, and these children already carry a heavy load. You may also miss any cues that show that this is a child who could one day explode in violence.

Find out more about metal detectors at metal detector info site. Schools everywhere are using metal detectors to help filter out violence. The metal detectors can very easily (for this is why they are used) detect a knife or gun. Police stations and Airports use them as well.

The Garrett Enforcer G-2 is the smallest body scanner and sensitive enough to detect even the smallest of knives or guns. The most popular one is the Super Scanner. It can detect hatpins as small as one inch.

Metal Detecting Techniques

Using a Garrett or Bounty Hunter metal detector is easy but, just like other hobbies, getting the best results will take some time and practice.

Walk along slowly, moving the coil from side to side. Waving the coil slowly will allow you to detect deeper objects. As the search pattern for most coils is shaped like a cone a four inch search area at the surface will only be one inch at ten inches deep. Some detectors have a D shaped search area and will cover a larger area. The Minelab Exacalibur has this pattern. Go over the whole area once to remove any junk then you can repeat the search to find any targets that were masked by the junk.

Discrimination

When detecting in a new area search the whole area first without using discrimination in order to remove any junk. Then you can repeat the search to find targets that were being masked. Aluminium foil can easily be mistaken for gold and lots of other junk also sounds like treasure so it’s best to remove these before using discrimination. When the junk has been removed use a grid pattern to search for targets. Although you’ll end up doing a lot of digging to remove ll the junk first you will find treasure! You can use discrimination more when you are more experienced and familiar with your metal detector.

Fill in the Holes

Always fill in any holes you have dug before you leave the site. In addition to leaving the area as you found it this will also prevent other treasure hunters from knowing where you were digging.

After a Rainstorm

Detectors often work much better when the ground is wet so after rain is a good time to go detecting. Objects can also be brought to the surface by sand and debris being washed away by the rain so are easier to find.

Where to Detect

Before you even go out to search for treasure do your homework. use the local library or the internet to find sites that were used in the past. Hotel sites, market places, popular beaches are all areas that can produce treasure. Other places to try are churches, old school yards and parks. Always ask permission before you dig holes on private land! Ask old people in your are where the popular places for people to congregate were, where people picnicked or where the old swimming holes used to be.

Our Favorite Treasure Hunting Places

Popular beaches are good places to find watches, coins, watches and relics.

Parks are another popular place to find treasure. This includes city parks, camping grounds, ballfields, picnicking places where you may find find coins, watches and jewelry. Shady places, for example under large trees or around old bandstands are good places to search.

Schools and playgrounds, recreation areas, swings etc are good places to find coins, jewelry and watches. Around old trees and grassy areas or shady spots where people would congregate are places to search.

Old houses and their backyards are great places to look. Search out old paths and walkways to search along. You may find coins, jewelry, relics etc.

Fishing spots, river banks, swimming holes and old marinas are great for finding relics, old coins, buttons etc.

Hiking trails, woods, old wagon trails and overgrown foundations are great places to search for coins, bottles relics etc.

The oldest buildings in many towns and villages are churches and many people congregated in the churchyard or around the church so they are great places for finding jewelry, relics coins etc.

MIKE SELVON asked:

Metal detectors are quite useful. They have many uses in many different fields, some of which include: the military in mine fields, airports and other security checkpoints, geophysical prospectors, and beach-combers.

The metal detector is also included in the detector radar family, because many use radar in their systems. Other members of the detector radar family include: car radar detector systems, weather radar systems, and cordless radar systems.

Metal detectors are made up of an oscillator that produces an alternating current that passes through a coil, which creates an alternating magnetic field. This means that when an electronically conductive metal is near the detector, it creates eddies of air, which causes a change in the magnetic field, which enables the operator to see where the metal is.

Handheld detectors are the most common, and are used in the majority of cases. Even land mines can be detected through the use of handheld devices. However, for really deep metals, ground penetrating radar is used in conjunction with the metal detector to unearth the hidden metal.

The metal detector has an interesting history. The first metal detectors were created in the late 19th century. The original inventors of the idea hoped to be able to create easier methods of finding ore for miners. One physicist, Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, invented the induction balance system in those days, but it took a hundred years for others to see the need for his idea.

Early machines were difficult to use, and took a lot of battery power. In the 1930’s, the modern metal detector format began to emerge. Gerhard Fisher is the first patented inventor of the metal detector. He discovered metal detecting quite by accident, when he found a discrepancy in his radio navigational methods. His model was used in WWII, yet afterwards, when there were surplus detectors lying around, the hobby of finding metal for entertainment was formed.

A metal detector is a very useful and entertaining tool. It is hard to imagine someone never having seen one. Nearly everyone has come in contact with metal detectors at least once. It is an interesting fact that the metal detector is part of the detector radar family.

This is due to the fact that many detectors use a cordless radar system in their mechanisms. The metal detector also has an interesting history, and thinking about it the next time you’re standing at a security checkpoint will give you something to ponder to pass the time.
